Roommates on Montreal's North Shore
Updated October 4, 2026
The North Shore (Montreal's northern suburbs) includes towns like Saint-Eustache, Deux-Montagnes, Pointe-Calumet, Boisbriand, Sainte-Thérèse, Blainville, Mirabel and Saint-Jérôme. Sharing here often means a room in a house or a basement unit, with more space than in the city, and the REM or exo train to get to Montreal.
Take the questionnaire to see compatible profiles and listings in this area.
Getting around
- REM: Deux-Montagnes and Grand-Moulin stations (in Deux-Montagnes), running since November 17, 2025, direct to downtown Montreal. From Saint-Eustache and Pointe-Calumet, you get there by exo bus or by car (park-and-ride lots).
- exo train line 12 Saint-Jérôme: Saint-Jérôme, Mirabel, Blainville, Sainte-Thérèse and Rosemère stations, through Laval to downtown (Lucien-L'Allier), with metro connections (De la Concorde, Parc, Vendôme, Lucien-L'Allier).
- exo buses (Laurentides sector) link towns, train stations and the REM; in Boisbriand, buses run to Sainte-Thérèse station among others.
- Highways 15 and 640: away from the train lines, a car is often useful.
Transit sources: STM, REM, exo. Always check your commute before signing.
The area at a glance
Saint-Eustache, Deux-Montagnes and Pointe-Calumet: on Lac des Deux Montagnes, near Oka National Park; the REM at Deux-Montagnes is a game changer for commuting to Montreal.
Boisbriand, Sainte-Thérèse and Blainville: along Highway 15 and the train line; Cégep Lionel-Groulx is in Sainte-Thérèse.
Mirabel and Saint-Jérôme: further north, at the gateway to the Laurentians; Saint-Jérôme has its own cégep and a Université du Québec en Outaouais campus.
Housing is mostly houses, basements and plexes. Before renting a room in a house, agree in writing on what's shared (kitchen, bathroom, parking, electricity).

Tips for renting in Quebec
- No deposits. In Quebec, a landlord may only ask for the first month's rent in advance. A security deposit or any other sum is not allowed, nor are post-dated cheques (Civil Code art. 1904). Someone asking for a transfer to "hold" a room before you visit? That's a classic scam signal.
- July 1. Most Quebec leases end June 30, so July 1 is the big moving day. Start looking in spring and book a truck or movers early.
- The TAL lease. The Tribunal administratif du logement lease form is mandatory for every new lease, even for a room. Between roommates, liability is joint (each pays their share) unless a solidarity clause is written in; see the TAL's joint tenancy page and its roommate agreement (French PDF).
- Lease assignment and subletting. To leave mid-lease, you can propose an assignment (cession) or a sublet. The landlord has 15 days to answer; since February 21, 2024, if they refuse an assignment without a serious reason, the lease ends on the date you gave. Details and templates on the TAL page.
- Visits and identity. Visit before paying, meet your future roommates and keep your exchanges in writing. On Ton Coloc, every member's identity is verified (photo ID + selfie, via Stripe Identity) before they can see matches and send messages. It isn't a background check, so do your own checks too.
